What is the WhatsApp Business API?
The WhatsApp Business Platform (commonly called the API) is Meta's official way for businesses to send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale. Unlike the free WhatsApp Business app — which works like WhatsApp Personal but with a business profile — the API connects your number to software, which is what allows multiple agents, automation, and thousands of messages.
The "API" in the name means Application Programming Interface. You don't need to touch the API yourself. A platform like Zonnex sits in between and gives you a dashboard, a chatbot builder, and a broadcast tool that use the API underneath.
App vs API: what actually changes
The WhatsApp Business app is free, requires no approval, and lets one person reply from one phone. It's the right tool for a solo founder.
The API removes the phone from the equation entirely. Your number connects to a platform — messages arrive and leave via software, not a device. This is what makes team inboxes, bots, and scheduled broadcasts possible.
The main tradeoff:
When your number is on the API, it can't also be on the WhatsApp app. You'll use Zonnex instead of your phone for incoming messages. Most businesses find this a relief — everything is in one place, visible to the whole team.
Who needs the API and who doesn't
You need the API if:
- More than one person needs to answer messages
- You want to send broadcasts to more than 256 people
- You need automation, chatbots, or integrations
- You want a message history that doesn't live on one phone
- You're running a business, not a hobby
You don't need it yet if:
- You answer all messages yourself
- Volume is under 50 conversations a day
- You're still testing the idea
How to get approved
Getting approved means creating a Meta Business Account, verifying it, and connecting a phone number. Zonnex's embedded signup handles all three in one flow — you'll be connected in about three minutes.
- 1Sign up for Zonnex (free trial, no card)
- 2Click "Connect WhatsApp" — embedded signup opens
- 3Log in with your Facebook account
- 4Create or select a Meta Business Account
- 5Choose your phone number (new or existing)
- 6Verify by OTP
- 7Done — send your first message
What it costs
There are two layers: the platform subscription and the message cost.
Platform: Zonnex starts at ₹999/month for 2 agents and 2,000 contacts.
Messages: Meta charges per message by category. India rates (as of Jul 2026): Marketing ₹0.82, Utility ₹0.15, Authentication ₹0.19. Customer-initiated replies are free.
